City-Guide Berlin

Berlin is a sporty place. The annual marathon celebrates the world’s best runners and their ever-increasing performance. Humble joggers like you and me also get a chance to put their best foot forward because the entire city is interlaced by green areas: Tiergarten, the Palace Park, Charlottenburg, the banks of the Landwehrkanal, the park surrounding Lake Lietzensee, all ideal for runners. Serious athletes find a choice of longer routes in the Grunewald Forest or in the extensive woodlands around Schlachtensee and Teufelsberg. A great idea for leisure joggers and new arrivals in Berlin is to go “sight running”, a clever combo of exercise and exploration. A fast way to get to know the city. On Saturdays, starting at the Victory Column, the rbb running event has become a regular institution. Nearly 20 years ago the inspiration came from Hajo Seppelt, the popular TV sports commentator: a 90-minute weekly workout to boost your oxygen intake and heart rate, even at crisp and cold temperatures. Nearly every neighbourhood has its own park or green area. Among the jogger community, the Fritz Schloss Park in Moabit counts as the best running route in town. Its well-lit cinder track features 14 different fun challenges like the trampoline, a wobbly bridge, and a horizontal bar for your pull-ups. 1.1 kilometres and you’re never bored. Located centrally near the main station, the route is still a secret among insiders. A good place to relax post-workout is the Vabali Spa right next door. Berlin has it all.
